Gutters for the river town below Storm King

By local accounts, Cornwall’s story starts in 1685, when Scottish families settled near the mouth of Moodna Creek. The Precinct of Cornwall followed in 1764, named for Cornwall, England, because the landscape looked alike. The writer Nathaniel Parker Willis moved here in 1846 to an estate along Moodna Creek he called Idlewild, a name still on Idlewild Avenue. Cornwall-on-Hudson, incorporated as a village in 1884, climbs the slopes of Storm King Mountain above Donahue Memorial Park, the old Cornwall Landing, and Route 218 winds through it on Bay View Avenue and Hudson Street. Inland, Firthcliffe sits along Route 9W, Mountainville lies out on Route 32 near Storm King Art Center, and Black Rock Forest and the Museum of the Hudson Highlands are both in town.

The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Hudson Valley runs local crews out of Page Park Drive in Poughkeepsie, and Cornwall is a regular stop on our runs across the river. On a typical visit we clean and flush, reseal seams, reset hangers, form any new runs right on site, replace soft fascia and add BroGuard stainless micro-mesh where it pays off. For steep village roofs on the Storm King slopes and big colonial roofs in town, 6-inch gutters give a hard summer rain or a fast thaw somewhere to go besides over the edge. Each estimate is written up free of charge.

Cornwall takes in about 42 inches of rain and melted snow in a normal year (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals at Dutchess County Airport near Poughkeepsie), across all four seasons. Homes on the steep streets of Cornwall-on-Hudson sit on the mountainside, so water that misses a gutter heads straight downhill to the next foundation or retaining wall. Wooded lots around town add oak and maple leaves in fall and seeds and catkins in spring. Our maintenance program schedules the cleanings so the troughs are empty before the freeze and before the summer storms.

“Brothers-Gutters are professional, courteous, and reliable. As we get older and second-story ladders are less manageable, it’s great having them clean and maintain our gutters. We look forward to working with them in the future. Thanks, B-G!”

Cornwall Gutter Questions, Answered

How often should gutters be cleaned in Cornwall, NY?

Plan on twice a year for most Cornwall homes: late fall after the oaks and maples finish dropping, ahead of the first hard freeze, and late spring once seeds and catkins are down. Wooded lots near the mountain and along the Moodna Creek valley can need an extra visit, especially where pines hang over the roof.

My house in Cornwall-on-Hudson is on a steep lot. Where should the downspouts go?

Away from the house and, where possible, away from the downhill neighbor. On the village’s mountainside streets, water from a downspout picks up speed fast. We extend outlets past the foundation and, where a short extension is not enough, tie them into underground drainage that carries the water to a spot that can take it.

Do older Cornwall homes need new fascia before new gutters?

Many do. Fascia on older village and town homes has often been painted over for decades, and the wood behind the paint can be soft. A new gutter fastened into rotten wood will pull loose under the first heavy snow. We check every board, replace what is bad and then hang seamless gutters into solid wood.

What size gutters are right for a big colonial in Cornwall?

For large or steep roofs, 6-inch seamless gutters usually beat 5-inch gutters, since they carry about 40 percent more water. Long runs need a second downspout once they pass about 40 feet. We measure the roof, look at where the water lands and put the recommended size in writing in a free estimate.

Do you work in Mountainville, Firthcliffe and Canterbury?

Yes. We work in the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, from Hudson Street and Bay View Avenue up the slopes, and across the Town of Cornwall, including Mountainville, Firthcliffe, Canterbury, Orrs Mill and the neighborhoods along Route 9W. Every estimate is free and written, and one local team handles the job from start to finish.
