Quick answer
Specialty Gutter Materials in the Hudson Valley, NY: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Hudson Valley installs gutters in copper, galvanized steel, Galvalume and colored aluminum, so you can match your trim, add a copper accent to an old Victorian or pick the metal that stands up best to snow and meltwater. A Solutionist weighs budget, function and looks with you before recommending one. Call (845) 223-6111 or book online.
Standard white aluminum works on plenty of homes, but it is not the only choice. Specialty materials let the gutter do more: copper that ages into a rich patina on a Victorian in Rhinebeck or Kingston, Galvalume that matches a farmhouse metal roof, galvanized steel for strength, or colored aluminum that blends into the trim.
Where you live matters too. Gutters here carry wet leaves in fall and snow and meltwater all winter, so material choice is about more than looks. Each metal has its own page with the details: copper, galvanized and Galvalume.

Copper, steel or colored aluminum: matching the metal to the house and the winters
Every specialty metal answers a different need. Use this to get down to one or two choices, then visit that metal’s page for specifics.
Most homeowners pick a gutter metal by how it looks, and that is a fine place to start. Here in the valley, two other questions decide whether the choice holds up. How much does the roof hold in winter? Snow load and meltwater lean hard on a gutter, and that is where galvanized steel and Galvalume earn their keep, especially on long eaves in Millbrook or Woodstock. And how long will you own the house? Copper’s long life matters most on a home you plan to keep.
Profile is its own choice. After you settle on the metal, our K-style and half-round styles page explains the shapes, and your Solutionist matches downspouts, hangers and accessories to your metal so every piece on the roofline belongs together.
Comparing the four metals
| Metal | Look over time | Strength and lifespan | Best fit in our area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | Bright gold at install, then brown, and in time a green patina | Longest-lived gutter metal there is, about 50 to 150 years when cared for | Victorians and older colonials in Rhinebeck, Kingston and Cold Spring |
| Galvalume | A flat gun-metal gray that does not change | A steel core coated in aluminum and zinc; cared for, it lasts close to as long as copper | Farmhouses with metal roofs, and modern exteriors anywhere in the valley |
| Galvanized steel | Plain mill finish, or painted to suit the trim | Extremely strong and resists warping in summer heat; Galvalume usually lasts longer | Lots under big maples and oaks, and long eaves that carry heavy snow |
| Colored aluminum | Factory baked color that keeps its shade | Light in weight and rustproof | Split levels and colonials in Wappingers Falls, Fishkill and Newburgh |
Questions to help you decide
- Should your gutters weather and change color over time, or look the same as the day they went up?
- How much snow sits on that eave? Under a heavy load, strength outranks looks.
- Do you have a metal roof? Galvalume blends straight into it.
- Planning to paint your gutters? Galvanized steel accepts paint; aluminum comes with baked-on color.
- How long do you plan to stay? Copper pays off over a long ownership.
- Happy with your trim color? A matching aluminum color might be all it takes.
When plain aluminum is still the best choice
A specialty metal earns its price when the gutter is part of the look: a half-round copper run on a river town Victorian in Beacon, or Galvalume against a farmhouse metal roof. On a split level in Wappingers Falls or Fishkill with white trim, plain aluminum formed on the truck as seamless gutters is often the honest recommendation, and we will tell you that at the free estimate. If you want the warmth of copper without the cost, Copper Penny and Dark Bronze aluminum get close. Your Solutionist can put two or three metals on the same free written estimate so you can compare price and lifespan side by side.

Why the Brothers
Why Hudson Valley Homeowners Call the Brothers
Lots of installers steer clear of Galvalume since the materials are harder to source and the work is more demanding. We are glad to do it.
Copper does not suit every home, and we will be upfront about that. We balance cost, function and appearance, not how big the invoice gets.
Rain chains, decorative conductor heads, rain barrels and embossed gutters can round out a specialty system.
Our crews work out of Page Park Drive in Poughkeepsie and cover Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Putnam counties.

What Hudson Valley Homeowners Say
“From Bret, who planned the job, to Nick and Ryan, who did the installation, we could not be more pleased. Bret explained our options very clearly. Nick and Ryan showed up on time, worked efficiently, were professional and personable. We highly recommend the Brother Gutters.”
Posted on Google“The lads came when they said they’d come, did what they said they’d do (including thorough cleanup), and charged what they said they’d charge (an eminently reasonable amount). More firms should try this. A very satisfactory experience; give them a try.”
Posted on Google“Their advice about what to do with the gutters on the front of our long house was much appreciated. The gutters have lasted through those intense rainfalls, eliminating the floods into our garages. I wish that I had had them do the back gutters before. Now we won’t be worrying about the gushing water down the back of our roof!”

Copper, colored aluminum, galvanized steel and Galvalume, in half-round or K-style. Each differs in appearance, life span and cost, and your Solutionist can put them next to each other on your free estimate for comparison.
Well-kept copper can last about 50 to 150 years, beating every other gutter metal, while most others last about 10 to 30. Often it outlives the roof itself. It begins a shiny metallic gold, turns brown and can go green with age as its patina develops.
Snow load, meltwater and freeze and thaw test every gutter here. Galvanized steel and Galvalume are the strongest of the four and resist bending under a heavy load, while aluminum will not rust when meltwater sits in the trough. Whatever the metal, the hangers matter most, so we screw them into solid wood. Your Solutionist will talk through what suits your roof before you choose.
Galvalume is steel with a coating made of 55 percent aluminum plus 45 percent zinc. Rust may begin at a cut edge, yet it halts when it hits the aluminum, and when cared for, Galvalume can last about as long as copper in many similar uses. Galvanized steel instead has a thin coat of zinc; it is very strong and holds paint well, though Galvalume usually lasts longer.
Copper is the classic choice for historic and high-end homes, and it looks especially good against brick, stone and wood. Half-round copper with round downspouts suits the Victorians and older colonials in river towns like Rhinebeck, Kingston and Cold Spring. If copper is outside the budget, Copper Penny or Dark Bronze colored aluminum gets close to the look for far less.
Yes. Galvalume has long been used as a roofing material, so matching Galvalume gutters to the metal roof on a farmhouse is an option. Its gun-metal finish does not fade in the weather, and it reads more modern and neutral than copper.
Galvanized steel is among the most durable choices and is less likely to crack under wind gusts, falling branches or a trough loaded with wet leaves, maple seeds and snow. Homes under big maples and oaks, or with long eaves that carry winter snow, get real value from that strength, and the steel does not warp in summer heat.
