Gutters for a river village and the bluestone town around it

Saugerties sits on the west bank of the Hudson where Esopus Creek meets the river. The name traces to the Dutch “Zagertje,” little sawyer, after a 1650s sawmill on the Sawyer’s Kill. Henry Barclay put the creek to work in 1828 with an iron works and a paper mill, and the village incorporated as Ulster in 1831 before taking the Saugerties name in 1855. Downtown is the Main and Partition Streets Historic District, lined with two and three story brick blocks, and the 1727 Dubois-Kierstede Stone House still stands on Main Street. Out in the town, bluestone was once quarried west of the village and shipped from Glasco and Malden, and the 1869 Saugerties Lighthouse still stands where the creek reaches the Hudson.

The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Hudson Valley runs local crews out of Page Park Drive in Poughkeepsie, and Saugerties is part of our regular Ulster County route. That means hand cleaning, resealed seams, reset hangers, new runs formed in the driveway, fresh fascia where the old boards are soft, and BroGuard stainless micro-mesh. For tall village houses and old farmhouses with steep roofs that shed water fast, 6-inch gutters carry the load from a summer storm or a March thaw without spilling over the front. Estimates are always free and in writing.

Saugerties averages about 42 inches of rain and melted snow a year (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals at Dutchess County Airport near Poughkeepsie), and it comes in all four seasons. Big maples drop leaves on roofs along the older village streets, and out in the town, wooded lots toward Blue Mountain and West Saugerties add oak leaves and pine needles. Near the river and Esopus Creek, a downspout that empties against an old stone or brick foundation keeps that wall wet all season. Our maintenance program clears the troughs after the leaves are down and again in spring, ahead of the freeze and the thaw.

“Brothers-Gutters are professional, courteous, and reliable. As we get older and second-story ladders are less manageable, it’s great having them clean and maintain our gutters. We look forward to working with them in the future. Thanks, B-G!”

Saugerties Gutter Questions, Answered

When should I get my gutters cleaned in Saugerties, NY?

Late fall is the most important visit for Saugerties homes, once the maples and oaks are bare and before the first hard freeze, because leaves left in the gutter freeze solid and block meltwater until spring. Homes under big trees, common on older village streets, should get a second cleaning in late spring after the maple seeds and catkins fall.

Can an 1800s house in the Saugerties village take seamless gutters?

Yes. Older village homes often have trim boards that have been repainted for a century or more. We probe the fascia first and replace soft sections, then form seamless runs on site to the length of each eave and screw the hangers into sound wood. On tall, steep roofs we often recommend 6-inch gutters to handle summer storms and snowmelt.

My farmhouse is out in the town. Does an older farmhouse need anything special?

Usually a closer look at the wood and the drainage. Farmhouse fascia is often original, and long roofs may drain to a single downspout at one corner. Runs longer than about 40 feet should have a second downspout. We replace bad boards, size the gutter to the roof and point every downspout away from the foundation, with underground drainage where the yard calls for it.

How do I protect an old stone or brick foundation in Saugerties from gutter water?

Keep the gutters clear and make sure every downspout discharges several feet from the wall rather than at the base of it. Old stone and brick foundations take on water when a corner gets soaked storm after storm. Extensions or underground drainage move that water out into the yard, and a cleaning before the freeze keeps meltwater flowing in winter.

Do you cover Malden, Glasco, Barclay Heights and the rest of the town?

Yes. We work in the village around Main and Partition Streets and across the Town of Saugerties, including Barclay Heights, Glasco, Malden, West Camp, Mount Marion, Quarryville and Blue Mountain. Every estimate is free and written, and the same local team handles the work from the first visit through the final downspout test.
