Somers held its first town meeting on March 7, 1788, under the name Stephentown, and took the name Somers in 1808 to honor Richard Somers, a naval captain from New Jersey. In the early 1800s Hachaliah Bailey toured an elephant named Old Bet through the Northeast, which is why Somers calls itself the cradle of the American circus, and his Elephant Hotel now serves as Town Hall and became a National Historic Landmark in 2006. Between 1890 and 1910 the Croton and Muscoot rivers were flooded for New York City reservoirs, and the summer lake communities that grew up afterward became year-round neighborhoods. Interstate 684 and new corporate campuses brought the town its biggest growth in the 1980s and 1990s.
