Quick answer

Gutter Styles in the Hudson Valley, NY: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Hudson Valley installs K-style and half-round seamless gutters matched to the house: K-style for the clean lines of colonials, split levels and ranches, half-round where the gutter is part of the look, like a Victorian in Rhinebeck or an old farmhouse in Dutchess County. Call (845) 223-6111 or book online.

A gutter runs the full length of the house, so its shape shows. K-style, with its flat back and decorative front, is the profile on most Hudson Valley homes because it is strong and carries a lot of water. Half-round is the rounded trough you see on older and more traditional homes, chosen mainly for appearance.

Victorians and old farmhouses in river towns like Rhinebeck, Kingston and Cold Spring are where half-round, often in copper, earns its place. On a colonial in Wappingers Falls or a split level in Fishkill, a K-style run in a color matched to the trim usually looks best. Ask your Solutionist which half-round options are available for your home.

Half-round or K-style, plus the pieces that complete the system

The profile sets the look. The hangers, downspouts and fittings decide how it holds up. Here is how each piece fits the homes we work on across Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Putnam counties.

Most of the K-style we hang goes on colonials and split levels from Poughkeepsie to Fishkill and on the newer two-story homes of Newburgh, Monroe and Carmel. Its flat back sits tight against the fascia, and the shaped front adds stiffness along a long eave under snow while holding plenty of water. On a house with simple trim, it simply looks right.

Half-round is about character. On a Victorian in Rhinebeck or an old farmhouse outside Millbrook, the rounded trough echoes the house’s era, and paired with round downspouts it becomes part of the architecture. It hangs differently, too, which affects how it is installed and serviced.

Each profile is available in 5 and 6 inch, and each can be made as a radius gutter that follows a curved wall, so picking a style never costs you capacity or shape.

Small parts most homeowners never see

  • Gutter wedges close the gap where the fascia tilts or trim runs behind the gutter, so each run hangs straight.
  • Roof straps clip into the hanger and attach to the roof on eaves that have no fascia board.
  • End caps get crimped in place and sealed, so water cannot escape out the open end of a run.
  • Elbows bring each downspout from the gutter back against the wall, then kick water outward at the base so it does not land at the foundation.
  • Conductor heads, aluminum or copper, add character atop a downspout and hold surging water where a big roof area drains to one spot.

Older Hudson Valley homes: what turns up behind the old gutters

If your gutters are more than about 10 years old, look at the front lip. A row of nail heads means a nail and ferrule system: a long nail driven through the front of the gutter, through a ferrule sleeve and the back, and into the fascia. It was the standard method 20 years ago, and it is the reason so many older Hudson Valley gutters sag. Through freeze and thaw the wood moves, the nails back out, and the run lets go under snow. We replace them with hidden hangers and check the board behind them, replacing soft wood through our fascia board service. That replacement is also the right time to change profile, whether that means half-round copper gutters on a Craftsman or K-style seamless gutters in a trim-matched colored aluminum. Our gutter sizes guide covers how big each run should be.

Why the Brothers

Why Hudson Valley Homeowners Call the Brothers

01An eye for the house

We look at the architecture before we talk profiles. A Rhinebeck Victorian and a Fishkill split level should not wear the same gutter.

02Details you cannot see

Hidden hangers and corners sealed three ways keep an attractive gutter doing its job for years.

03Solutionists, not salespeople

We will say so when plain K-style aluminum is the better call, even if copper half-round looks beautiful in pictures.

04Part of a national brand

Founded in 1999 by brothers Ken and Ryan Parsons, with local crews here in Poughkeepsie, and focused only on gutters.

Gutter Style Questions, Answered

What is the difference between K-style and half-round?

K-style has a flat back and a K-shaped face, and it is the profile you see most on houses and commercial buildings since it is sturdy and carries plenty of water. Half-round is a curved trough chosen mainly for its looks, which makes it a specialty style. Each comes in 5 and 6 inch.

Which gutter style suits a Victorian in Rhinebeck or a split level in Fishkill?

Half-round, often in copper, suits the Victorians and old farmhouses of Rhinebeck, Kingston and Cold Spring, where the gutter is meant to be noticed. A colonial or split level in Fishkill or Wappingers Falls usually looks cleanest with K-style matched to the trim. We can show both against your actual roofline.

Can a gutter follow a curved wall?

Yes. Either K-style or half-round can be made as a radius gutter that curves along a rounded section of the house. That keeps the water under control around the curve, with no break in the system. Bring it up at your free estimate.

Which gutter hangers last longest?

We use the Quick Screw hidden hanger. Its screw comes already started, a sleeve around it adds strength, and a gentle arch on the bottom makes it stiffer. It goes in on an angle, through the gutter’s back wall and into the fascia. Old spike and ferrule hardware loosens as wood swells and shrinks through Hudson Valley seasons, and bargain hidden hangers cut a gutter’s life short.

How do you keep corners from leaking?

Corners are where leaks often start, so we seal each one in three spots: down the manufacturer’s center seam, inside where the runs lap into it, and across the top where they join. Angled walls and bay windows get a bay miter so the runs meet neatly.

Are round downspouts better than rectangular ones?

For drainage, no. Both handle water and debris about the same, so it comes down to looks. Round corrugated downspouts are strong and pair well with copper half-round on an older home in Kingston or Beacon, while smooth round downspouts come only in copper and dent more easily.
